Some call it the Graduation Hypothesis. Many serial killers have had a history of cruelty to animals when they were young. It's not a sure fire determinant of predicting who will become a serial killer, but it's commonly found.

From Animal Cruelty to Serial Murder: Applying the Graduation Hypothesis
By: Jeremy Wright & Christopher Hensley
Although serial murder has been recorded for centuries, limited academic attention has been given to this important topic. Scholars have attempted to examine the causality and motivations behind the rare phenomenon of serial murder. However, scant research exists which delves into the childhood characteristics of serial murderers. Using social learning theory, some of these studies present supporting evidence for a link between childhood animal cruelty and adult aggression toward humans. Based on five case studies of serial murderers, we contribute to the existing literature by exploring the possible link between childhood cruelty toward animals and serial murder with the application of the graduation hypothesis.
I don't have access to the full article, but there's an abstract to show what I'm talking about.

anyways the kid is just being a kid. we all did crazy things to animals as a kid. I had a friend who tied his lizard to his remote control car and slowly drove it into the humber river and we all laughed.

But is this not just a theory? There isn't enough statistical data to prove this right?
Just wondering because I studied some psychology in University also and it can get interesting, as well at times very complicated...

You're right. Just b/c a child tortures animals does not mean that they will turn out to be a murderer. And just b/c someone is a murderer does not mean that they tortured animals as a child. It's just something that seems to appear a lot when it comes to serial killers. So it's a possible red alert for parents if their child does this, but it doesn't effectively predict future behaviour.

Unfortunately no. They had a homicide course, but it didn't focus at all on serial killers, which pissed me off b/c I've always been fascinated by them.
