Copyright infringement is not theft. |
Bullshit number two, Storyteller is spot on. If I make something and put it out there to be sold and someone copies it for distribution and other people get that copy, then that is stealing!!!!, unless you want to try to redefine the basic global principles of intellectual property.
Jarvmeister, it's fine that your friend gives you music that you would not have found normally, but if you decide you like it, then go out and buy it. There's nothing wrong with a promo from someone you know, or for music that is not released, but realise that by making or receiving copies of peoples work, you are stripping someone of their lively hood by doing this.
It takes a shitload of work, expensive equipment, talent and time to make even a slightly decent track, so the least you can do pay a whole $1.50 for it. Christ, you can't even buy a donut or a can of drink in most places for that now - is it really too much to consider paying that for something that you will really like and might even make money off by playing it in a club?

Theft involves the loss of tangible property that cannot be duplicated. If I go into a record store and shoplift a CD from the shelves, it is theft--the store has been deprived of its property. If I download that same album, it is copyright infringement--no one has been deprived of property, the digital files have simply been duplicated. There IS a difference.
I'm not trying argue against purchasing music, I'm just pointing this out. |
I know - I'm not saying it's the physical action of theft itself - that obviously involves something belonging to a person or entity being taken without permission.
I'm saying the copying and distribution of intellectual property is tantamount to theft and in terms of both morality and loss, it's exactly the same thing.
To the owner of the material, you might as well steal it from their house. That's my point and I bet most people who don't care, have never released anything.
