Yeah, CDMA was introduced to improve performance with fidelity, range and penetration through materials, which it does do. I can get a signal on quite a few underground subway platforms in TO.

I wouldn't say it blows
for peeps who never leave the country and don't care much if they need to get a new phone, it's good - they have much better plans and features

I prefer my European GSM phones so sucks for me

btw just signed up for that Killer Offer with Fido - $17.50/month!

Yeah certainly was not the case in 2001, when I was with Rogers. As soon as I jumped in an elevator in any of the buildings in the financial district, the phone would cut out right away. I tried a few models to make sure it was not the phone.

Obviously they must have upgraded their infrastructure. I'm sure in application, their performance is very similar, but on paper, CDMA wins (slightly).

I was at a Telus Career Info session, and one tool asked the same question: "why doesn't Telus upgrade to GSM?" The rep's answer went something like this: "Our main priority is to service the needs of our customers. Switching our network would cost us an immense amount of money and capital, with only marginal gains in user base. Hence it's not worth it. Besides, next-generation networks are already under development that are going to blur the lines between GSM and CDMA anyway. It makes more sense for us to wait and switch to the next generation network than to jump the ship to GSM and then have to upgrade again later."
