It's just electrons branching out trying to "find the ground" and establish a channel, when one hits the ground, or meets with positive charges coming up, a channel is then formed for the rest of it, which is why the branches only appear for a bit

Thanks. That seemed to be the logical answer, but I'm no physical scientist or electrician. Things I know about eletricity: 1.) it can get you killed.
