Before I started working this week I was up until at least 4 every night, and now I'm still finding it hard to get to sleep. I'm running on between 4-5 hours a night right now.

mm, that's shit. well at least with 3rd shift you'll be getting some sort of shift premium of some sort. i'll be waking up for work when you have your first break

Magic words as far as I'm concerned right now. Once I know the terms of the project (i.e. length), I'll probably make up my mind - but as long as it's less than 6 months I'll probably take it just to pay off more of my student loans.

My buddy just started working 10pm-6am 3rd shift. Totally screwed up his social life & weekly habits.

I have neither to lose at the moment, so no worries here on that end.

My only concern right now is getting a more definite idea of the terms of the project (they can range anywhere from a month to a decade - though in fairness, I do know this is less than a year).
Sounds horrible, and you wont be able to see your friends :/

Yeah - also not so much a problem these days. I'm living in a city where I have none.

Oh man, I'm just like that picture of AGQ.

I hate any shift other than 8-5 or 9-6. If it is 6-3 it sucks cause you gotta get up too early, and 3-10 sucks cause it fucks your social life. Same with 3rd shift. Although considering your situation, I guess it isn't that bad.

Hows the job going btw?

Screws up your health, screws up your social life, but I still say night shifts are an experience to be had at least once in your life.

This.

Hell, suffering through many a night shift has earned me a 5AM-2PM, Monday-Friday shift, so I can certainly say that it was worth it.

I've worked the night shift for long periods of time before... it can be very strange. After a few days you'll get used to sleeping during the day and being awake at night, but there's much more that you have to get used to. For me it was really hard to ever go out with friends because we were always awake at different times. All the stores are closed when you're up.

Makes it really easy to party all night though
