its all in the transitions imo

and another thing, if something doesnt sound "full" enough, dont start adding things, tweak what u got instead til it sounds full enough for you. if not, delete it, its all about keeping it at a minimum imo

alot of tracks ive heard lately could just as well be three tracks.

I think a lot of people get build ups confused with actually increasing sound levels etc, you wanna avoid that.

When you think build up think CHANGE.
Close a filter on one sound slowly, open filter on another sound slowly.
Automate a flanger over some sounds to sweep in the beat before it drops.
Open or close a reverb (to make it sound like its coming out of water and into air)
Automate pitch, lfo, and filter on a single pad note so pitch rises, lfo speeds up, and filter opens.

I mean build ups have SO MANY different ways of executing. I find lazy people just drop a snare roll but used right hey it works.
For my build ups though I always notice thats when automations really do a lot of their work.

being it a personal preference , i love a good goosebumpy breakdown.

mega breakdowns like olmec heads - spritualized and G&D's version of no one on earth , really define a tune IMO
