It seems to me that 'creation' is religion's game. I think that math is just an observation in general; a system of communication "created" by man to denote a certain concept, the concept being the subject of scientific observation. Mathematical theorum, just as scientific theorum, are dependent on testing and proof, the difference seemingly arising from the fact that hard science typically has an object of observation whereas mathematics is almost entirely the manipulation of "imaginary" concepts that can conceivably be observed in almost every facet of the world we know.

But it seems to me that these functions exist around us all of the time whether we are cognizant of them or not. Because mankind can assign a name and a number to something doesn't mean that object's existence is suddenly validated. Or does it? Ugh, sorry, too metaphysical.

Just think about the mathematics of each and every fibre of being you can fathom. You would have to be staggeringly arrogant to assume that man knows all there is to know about existence; with this in mind, does it not seem as though there are realms of understanding, mathematical or not, simply waiting to be explored and tested? Of course it is unscientific to proceed into theory without observation, but it seems to me that the future of our understanding is apodeictic; that we have a destiny in development and that our language has never had anywhere to proceed without increasing complexity.

the E8 group, if my understanding is correct, is the most complicated structure that can be built in three dimenions and includes every orientation possible, even though it is considered an 8 dimenional object. like basically every shape we have in the three dimensional world is in the E8 structure, like circles, triangles, conic sections, etc etc etc

i remember reading something about 8-9 months ago that proposed this structure held the key to unifying the 4 fundamental forces. i'll look for the PDF

Anyway, let me clarify, I was trying to say that I used to base my appreciation of subjects (including Math, but also things like History) on their practicality in the 'real world' when I was younger. Yes, a foolish position now, but you have to understand that we all question the Why of things when we are young, that's just how we are.

Now I appreciate something for what it is, independent of how it can be applied in the outside world. It doesn't have to be able to get me a job. It doesn't have to make me money. It can just be fun or interesting to me, and if I choose to spend money, time, and mental effort on learning and exploring it for the sake of doing so alone, then so be it. Before, I was the opposite but I see the light today. That's why I intend to be in academia even when I retire. I like learning new things, as much as my time on earth and my mental capacity will reasonably allow. I value the intelligence I was born with and the knowledge that's out there because they are both tools I will need to further my exploration successfully. That, and a strong motivation coupled with endless curiosity and imagination.

Pointless is not worthless. There was a brilliant article on Math that I wish I could find now. A mathematician made this excellent argument that pure Mathematics can have absolutely no practical use but that doesn't mean it's pointless to learn it. Years from now, we might have an application for it, or it might better or understanding of something else. This guy made me appreciate Math way, way, way before I made this thread about Mandelbrot fractals, please do not get me wrong. I appreciate equations just as much.

I didn't fully explain my thoughts because I thought they were implied, but yes, the focus of this this thread is more images. I like all aspects of Math, I just want to focus on finding some more cool images to look at. That's the specific purpose of this thread, not my specific or sole interest in Math.

If you want to further debate me, please go right ahead. I always welcome that (as you've seen many times before), it helps me reevaluate my stance and can be useful if others provide clear and effective arguments for what they think.
