I wonder if the civilians will need to pass a security clearance. Obama wouldn't be able to sign up in his own Civilian National Security Force. Interesting thought

I found more from that speech he gave. I hope this means he's just asking people to join the Foreign Service and the Peace Corps as a volunteer.

"And we're going to grow our Foreign Service, open consulates that have been shuttered and double the size of the Peace Corps by 2011 to renew our diplomacy. We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."

If he's asking people to join the Foreign Service he can count me out. I'm all about having diplomats and I respect their decision to serve, but I'm not putting myself in harm's way. You can call me selfish, but I prefer to see myself as being smart.

"Reports this morning indicate the State Department will order hundreds of its diplomats to Iraq or they face being asked for their resignations. That's diplo-speak for they will be fired.

The same reports say this is the first time mandatory assignments of such size have been made since the Vietnam War.

He argues that the way the world is headed, U.S. diplomats are going to increasingly find themselves in dangerous territory. Get over it, he essentially tells them."

As an American we all know about the Peace Corps and I think we all have our reasons for not even remotely considering joining. Those of you that do decide to sign up...good for you. I wish you luck. I, on the other hand, have a mortgage and other bills to pay. Plus, I have zero desire to leave my family.

How long do Volunteers serve? Are shorter assignments available?

All Peace Corps Volunteers commit to 27 months of training and service overseas. During this time, you will earn vacation time. The Peace Corps does not offer short-term assignments.

I'm sure I'll offend a few people in saying this, but if it weren't for America's rather aggressive/intrusive foreign policies, you guys wouldn't be 'in harm's way' would you? There would be no reason.

Fuck them if they get offended. It's their own fault.

I'm not trying to offend, merely discuss.

God, you get your news from chain e-mails, don't you?

Near as I can tell, Obama delivered a speech back in July where he mentioned wanting to expand the Peace Corps by providing greater incentive for civilian diplomatic positions. Is that really so fucking terrible? Never has he said he plans on making [para]military service compulsory for citizens. Drudge up a link from a credible source and I will rescind my comment - for that matter, drudge up a source for everything you quoted in your original post.

It's really quite healthy for citizens to question their government's every move - to be wary of encroachment and stand up for their rights when they are impeded upon for the sake of 'realistic progress'. But don't just make shit up.
