that's the perfect description! keeping the crowd but not spending them.
Mull's points are great. I would say that a good opener can still have high/lows and memorable moments though. Mark Oliver on many a night threw down a killer opening set, that would even include a few bombs. it always felt like the bar was being set high for the headliner and it really built up anticipation for a great night.
