get the olympus evolt 510 with the two lens kit. you can get for around $500 for body and lens (recently came out with 520, so that dropped price a bit). great beginner camera

personally, i wouldnt buy anything made my olympus when it comes to photography. i'd rather get a sony/pentax over olympus.

just interested in your reasoning here. I understand Nikon/Cannon are the heavy weights, but for the value you cant go wrong with the 510. i have had for about a year now and have had no complaints what so ever. Again, not saying your wrong, just want to know why you would put olympus at the bottom.

No it doesnt.

The Nikon D90 does HD Video @ 720p.

The only Canon to shoot video is the 5D Mark II, and it shoots at FULL HD, 1080p, significantly higher quality than 720p.

I'd recommend the 50D over the D90 anyway, who cares about video when it sucks (not the picture quality, but the execution of recording video; no auto-focus!?)

Is this overkill for a birthday present?

Nikon
**ON SALE**
D90 w/ AFS DX 18-105mm f3.5-5.6G ED VR

The D90 is the world’s first* digital SLR camera with an innovative movie shooting function that delivers cinematic results, creatively enhanced by the shallow depth of field made possible by the DX-format sensor. This is further refined by the optical quality and broad selection of NIKKOR lenses — the same lenses used by professional photographers. D-Movie images exhibit less noise than those of a typical camcorder, most notably in low light situations, thanks to the D90’s large image sensor.
12.3 Megapixel Resolution
DX Format CMOS Sensor
Expeed Image Processing Engine
4.5 frames per second continuous shooting (buffer: 7 RAW, 25 JPEG fine, 100 JPEG Normal)
ISO 200-3200 Sensitivity (100-6400 expandable)
Movie capture at up to 1280 x 720 (720p) 24 fps with mono sound
Image Sensor Cleaning (Sensor Shake)
Live View with contrast-detect AF, face detection
3.0-inch 920,000 pixel TFT-LCD Display
Vignetting Control in-camera
3D Tracking AF (11 point)
Includes: AFS DX Nikkor 18-105mm f3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens

2 Years Nikon Canada Warranty
