I have to hit the number 1 key pretty hard for it to work. I don't think the key just pulls off so you can clean under it on a laptop... I tried and there was too much resistance, so I gave up.
Just live with it, or get it fixed somewhere.

Do you have a soft keyboard? How do you just change it? My Toshiba laptop was bought in 2003 or 2004, so it has hard keys and it doesn't look like I could just simply change it for a new one.

You can pull the keys off many laptop keyboards, because I've accidentally done it once. I was pissed off with an essay I was under extreme pressure to get finished and I typed so aggressively I popped the K key out. If you hook something underneath one edge you can pop them off without any damage and have a look underneath. They snap back into place with a bit of fiddling.
More annoying for me is my laptop's LMB is dying. It only clicks properly on one side. The other night it was close to giving up altogether so I did the logical thing: got my penknife blade down one edge, jammed it underneath the button and fiddled about vaguely (this is not one great euphemism, I promise). It seems to work again now, although I've no idea what problem can be fixed by jamming a knife into it and playing around for a few seconds.
