This is sad.

Not only was this guy one of the greatest business minds in Canadian history, but, Ted was an amazing philantropist:

- Blue Jays
- Sky Dome
- Ryerson Business School
- Ryerson Media School
- University of Toronto
- Toronto General Hospital

Ted was an Officer of Order of Canada and a member of the Canadian Business Hall of Fame.

Toronto (and Canada) has lost a great community member.

Oh RJ, I really love you as a friend but sometimes I really don't agree with you. This is one of those times.

The majority of the above is nothing to do with philanthropy and everything to do with furthering his business empire. Only perhaps the hospitals can be viewed as alturistic but even then, it's a pretty long shot for such a wealthy man.

The Rogers centre - that land is worth 10 times what he paid for it.

University links - great business decision to cherry pick from.

Toronto and Canada have lost a war baby who worked really hard and stood by his conservative views to make him a very rich man. Certainly no community hero.

I have to disagree with you. Ted Rogers had put so much money into our school and I am proud to attend the Ted Rogers School of Management. He has helped rebrand our school and position ourselves as a first class business school.

Many students have recieved scholarships because of Ted Rogers and his wige.

He was proud of our school, kind to students, took time out of his work schedule to make appearences at our school.

He recognized that by putting money into our school it will result in better educated students who will become successful business professionals. Not only Rogers will benefit from this, all Canadian business will as well.

I do not see whats wrong with that.

He is very admired in our school

He is a community Hero to me.

Sorry, you're right Rachel:

Mr. Rogers remains deeply committed to charitable and not-for-profit work. Named Outstanding Philanthropists of 2002 by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Toronto Chapter, Ted and Loretta Rogers have given millions of dollars and much of their time to educational and health-related charities, including the University of Toronto, Ryerson University, Toronto General Hospital, and Sheena’s Place, an agency supporting those affected by eating disorders.

The Rogers have given more than $27.5 million to the University of Toronto in the last two years. The Edward S. Rogers Sr. National Electrical and Computer Engineering Scholarship Program will award close to 100 scholarships a year and attract the finest undergraduate and graduate students from around the world. This program and the Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, both named in honour of Ted Rogers' father, have benefited enormously from the Rogers' gifts and have positioned the U of T as one of the world's leading technology schools. The Rogers' gifts to the Bahen Centre for Information Technology and the John W. Graham Library at Trinity College inspired other generous alumni/ae to fund these Important centres of learning within the University.

The Rogers family's 1989 pledged gift of $2 million to launch Ryerson's With Pride & Purpose Campaign was the single largest gift received by Ryerson since its founding in 1948. This gift began the construction of the Rogers Communications Centre at Ryerson University, a premier multi-media facility in the areas of Journalism Radio and Television Arts, Applied Computer Science, and Image Arts. Another gift ot $10.5 million launched the Edward S. Rogers Sr. Graduate School for Advanced Communications in the Faculty of Communication & Design. Thanks to Loretta and Ted Rogers' continuing generosity, Ryerson will offer 15 graduate scholarships. Ryerson University is a leading training ground for multi-media and communications professionals in Canada because of the Rogers' outstanding philanthropic gifts to the Centre, the Graduate School and the scholarship program. In 2008 Loretta & Ted Rogers donated $15 million to Ryerson University to establish the Ted Rogers School of Management.

Loretta and Ted Rogers give their time and leadership to the organizations they support. Both are currently involved in Ryerson University's "Invest in Futures" Campaign, Ted as Honourary Co-Chair and Loretta as a member of the Campaign Cabinet. Loretta Rogers has served two terms on Ryerson's Board of Governors and is a Founding Director of Sheena's Place, an agency that supports those affected by eating disorders. Ted Rogers sits on the Board of Governors of Junior Achievement Canada, was active on the Parents Committee at the University of Western Ontario, and was Chair of the 2001 Spring Reunion at the University of Toronto.

The Rogers' philanthropy is described as transformational. Their gifts launch people, places and ideas and their vision draws others into the dream and the reality of creating a changed and dynamic community.

Loretta & Ted Rogers were nominated by the University of Toronto and Ryerson University for Outstanding Philanthropists of 2002.

Guys, the man is worth 3 billion.

Until I see gifts of at least half of that - he will not be a philanthropist in my eyes.

A great business man? Definitely.

Tara, I am happy that your school has benefitted but is it without gain to the Rogers empire? No.

Is he feeding starving kids in Africa or aiding the HIV drugs charities? Not to my knowledge.

Call my cynical if you will, that's your prerogative.

RJ, I would be interested to know your source on that last piece, seems like PR material to me.

Yes, it's a write up by the unaffiliated 3rd-party award organization who made him philanthropist of the year 2002.

Exactly.

Like I said, he was worth $3bn. I am surprised that the total of $55m in donations in that article meant that he was Philanthropist of the year, 2002. He would have made that in bank interest over the 2 years they're speaking of.

55/3000 is less than 2%

Forgive me if I am not bounding around.

can't trash the man - he is a tremendous business person and giving money is not a requirment, its a choice - so he is quite the philanthropist

anyone who claims that he's greedy is full of shit - the man gives a tremendous amount of money to many causes to support the city and the province

i'd be pleansatly surprised to see that you gave half of your accumulated wealth to help the needy - when you work your ass off to generate 27.5m to give away to anything, i'll shut up but until then - respect the fact that he didn't buy the skydome to build condos (because we all know condos would make more money for him than the jays do)

RIP Ted Rogers
