No, most big DJs are playing in a club somewhere at that time.

Nearly all the big boys pre-record it, rather than live (unless it's actually a live event). They mainly do it in one shot, then add the segment sections, ad breaks, promos, edit etc, after the fact.

these days there's really not that much advantage to doing it live - the technology is there so that it doesn't need to be.

I do know that judge jules used to do it live on R1 and Graham Gold also used to do it live on kiss, but JJ doesn't anymore and GG is not on air?

Remember though, all the big guys have a radio producer (or two) or at least assistants/engineers to help.

Mr Mystery is spot on with some of the big guys though.....

I agree with Rann here. And tools such as ableton allow you to compose a 2 hour radio show in less then that .

Not true. I host a weekly radio show in here and I do it live 10pm-1am. If the next person does not show up, sometimes I spin until 5am in the radio station...

What would someone get paid for such a gig (10pm-5am)?

Any sane well known dj wouldn't be spending a late night in a radio studio if he could have earned triple the money with a crowd.

+1 radio DJ's (even radio personalities) are notoriously badly paid - in fact the industry has bugger all compared to other mainstream media.

Even Chris Moyles, Radio 1 biggest listener draw gets a measly 600,000GPB per year (fair enough it's not a commercial station) but Johnny Vaughn at his peak on the biggest commercial station got 1m GBP per year.

Might sound like a lot to the factory worker, but you have to realize that these guys were the top in their field and best paid in their industry - name any other industry where if you were that famous or have that much appeal and would still settle for that low money?

Sports, No. Fashion, No. TV, no. Music, No. Technology, no. Art, No.

Even some division 1 football players that you've never heard of (or ever will) get paid more than that.

The difference being that Guetta had bookings coming out of his arsehole and you obviously don't, otherwise you wouldn't be doing an extra 4 hours on your radio show just for the crack of it.

Not having a go, just saying...

Of course it depends on who you are and what you do, but I disagree with that general - whenever I've personally used Ableton to put together a radio show or a podcast, it's taken about twice as long as it would have done to do it live and I know various people who have said the same about their own radio shows and mix compilation CDs etc - it's generally accepted that the only reason to 'fake' it is to make it perfect, it ends up taking longer to do.

I'm not saying no one can do it quicker than the show length, but generally I've heard a lot of people saying it doesn't tend to happen like that.

i see, ableton or sony acid are preferred...but in ableton you have to set the cue many time in each track to wrap it over the next song...if this is really so, it takes a lot of time (as i tryd to do it and take from tutorial from youtube..)

i will try sony acid pro, i looks from tutorials much easyer than ableton.

have somebody expirince with this - or both?

happy new year!
