I went in for a two hearing tests after I noticed tinnitus. Unfortunately neither location was able to test above 8 KHz though I know from testing at home that I can at least hear up to 20 KHz. However, I'm pretty sure both tests indicated slight deafness in one ear (I'm 18!). I guess I should go check those results.

I'll definitely be buying myself a pair of musicians earplugs before I'm old enough to go clubbing (the kind that cut volume evenly across the spectrum). Like someone above posted, going deaf is a pretty scary thought.

Not to derail the thread, anyone know if earplugs protect you from the lows as well? I don't understand how a little piece of foam is going to save my scilia from vibrations that travel through my body.

Yeah they do.

And your body will act as a dampener anyway, so bass isnt an issue.

I'm not sure about in depth about how much of each range I can hear

but I can hear from about 15hz-18,000hz although 17-17,000hz would be the much more clear area. 20khz is actually a pretty high estimate, I doubt you can hear that high. It seems to me like 17hz-17k would be the healthy/average young amount.

I was tested about 4 years ago... I can't remember what my range was but the doctor said it was slightly abnormal. Apparently i have a range that is shifted slightly upwards - where I can't hear just below normal lows but I can hear ultra high frequencies. Kinda gay really.

Fact of the day = A rat has a sonic range of approximately 200hz - 76,000hz but a mouse has a range of 1000hz - 91000hz.

- Got my hearing tested in a shopping mall by some claims company.

- Environment wasn't great (could still hear outside noise, clutter , etc.) But the guy said it was within 5dB of a sound proof room (not sure about this.)

- I told them I DJ/Produce, but do not work in a noisey environment, so they had no incentive to sell me anything but offered me a hearing test any way.

- The result: My ears are fucked. Speech (2-5khz) is normal to above normal when taking into account back ground noise, but around 8khz my hearing is very, very bad. Like 35db below normal!

The guy said he'd worked in engineering for 38 years and his ears aint that bad. A DJ was also in earlier and had similar results.

Any of you guys had one done? Pretty scared now, but thank fuck for stem cell research and nano technology (I am confident we will be able to replicate any human organ sucessfully within my lifetime)

get a real hearing test done
