pretty much the same principle as a slanted roof
its designed so the snow doesnt stay on top, slides down
not to mention the material it is made out of contributes to its sliding
i mean, i dunno how often u see snowblocks falling from the sky

not really, ALOT of snow and ice would make it collapse. Most of the time, snow slides off by itself, or a little poking with a stick does wonder.

Well, 100 years ago or more, they weren't really planning for cars en masse.
