the book is fantastic. Reading it can be difficult, just like understanding spoken glasweigan i guess, and I was born there.
seriously, if you like the movie, get the book

Synopsis...read it about 7 years ago (I'm amazed at the amount and difficulty of books I read back then, today I'm this intellectually numb, old and tired working putz)...group of friends portrayed in each decade, from the 70s childhood in Scottland, to teenage trouble, to twens excesses at the Oktoberfest, to drug-induced post-quarterlife-crisis in the techno era. Amazing once you're "in it".

There's a film, shot in 2006, by Alexis dos Santos (based on this book). I thought you had seen it

Sounds like an interesting story though, I'll look into it

Not for me it wasn't. I guess being born in the 70's would make one relate more to the bleak 80's outlook it had. I remember seeing it for the first time on a date in 96. It basically planted the idea in me to abandon all my friends and get the hell out of Perth (Australia, not Scotland) and start my life anew, which I did after I finished uni in 98. I then spent the next 11 years in Japan having a great time. A choice I would definitely make again.

What I took from the movie is that your relationships are what make you. Heroin was just an analogy for how powerful a negative effect they could have. In the end though, one still has the choice to live life how one wants. I thought that was a pretty powerful message when I was 19.

I was born in 1973

I found it to be a wee bit over the top, though I agree that the 'choose life' message (to borrow the line) that is ultimately the point is relevant to that generation (and perhaps still is now).

call me a pessimist, but I doubt that most people who think so highly of the film actually extrapolate a similarly profound message as you did.

maybe my criticism is less about the film itself and more about how it was received by so many people...?

That is what I would construe from the word "overrated". There are plenty of things I adore, but fucking hate everyone else who likes these things as well. It's not a critique of the work, itself, rather, displeasure at the fan base.

displeasure at the reason for the fanbase, yes. if everyone was so moved as spiralhelix, I'd say that's fantastic. but for everyone person who extrapolated a similar message from the film, there are 10 people who think the drugs and antics were "cool" and that's the reason they think it's the best film ever, lol.

meh...to each their own.

Trainspotting is the ill dopest of movies. the book is pretty good but sometimes it's hard to figure out what the characters are saying because it's scottish engrish style
