Am i wrong?

Guv has been booking the mainstream DJs for years...it has nothing to do with Z103.

I'm interested in what Circa will do this year. They bought in a few big names last year.

my thoughts exactly. with the condos going up at guv, citizens brain washed by the media that clubbing is killing their kids *WONT SOMEONE PLEASE THINK ABOUT THE CHILDREN?!?!?!* that mentallity will now appear since street racing has pretty much stopped being the hot topic now.

i have a feeling afterhours and edm parties are going to go the same route as raves did when they where all the rage in the media.

but as far as dj's go. i think some new talent might start comming in this year but to smaller clubs and not big name dj's.

I've never seen the event forum looking so bleak. I don't even have to scroll

The Guv's Special Events section is just depressing right now

January's usually the slowest month of the year.

I hope to see more proper-minimal coming through, not the boring-ploddy slow stuff. Not all minimal techno needs to be slow.

Mostly though, I hope to see more DJs playing different genres in their sets and playing 'good music' and not the 'current trend'. Snips of house, breaks, dub, techno, minimal and spaced out weird loops - whatever gets people moving. Paying attention to good music that gets people moving regardless of genre, not paying attention to the trend of the moment.

I hope to see Platform upping the ante a bit more this year. I think that with the growing popularity of techno, these guys have huge potential. They had some good bookings in 2008.

In 2008, the "Toronto sound" started moving away from minimal into harder techno. I expect this to continue, and then eventually techno will start getting deeper with deep house making a comeback. This new deep techno and deep house sound is really gaining momentum in Europe.

+ 1

A DJ I have been loving since I saw him at Circa in early 2008 and then in Berlin at Berghain is Jesse Rose. Since coming back I have thought his style and sound (just like Nick Hoppner, Marcel Dettman) is going to be the next big thing. Funny enough Jesse gets the first Essential Mix of 2009.

I hope there are more interesting venues and locations for parties this year (Sunnyside Pavilon, etc.) and less of the big name DJ on a boat. The cruise is fun with locals so do something different and find other interesting outdoor venues for these parties. It won't happen in 2009 but some friends of mine got a tour of the old Don Jail to see if they thought it could be used for events (they don't do EDM events). At least people in this city are starting to think like they do in Europe (using these old amazing buildings for things they were not intended to be used for instead of tearing them down). A small crazy party in the old Don Jail would be awsome.
Link to some pics of the space.

I also hope to check out some more Box of Kittens events as they seem to be doing exactly what I am enjoying.

For some reason I also think 2009 will be the demise of the Cherry Beach parties. They were simply getting too big and popular last year and seemed to be attracting a different crowd. I hope I'm wrong but it is just a feeling I have.

+1 for more harder techno, bringing in more "new" DJ's, more psy/prog trance, and a new outdoor festival with a handful of international DJ's mixed in with all the locals.

I guess this is the one thread where promoters can go nuts posting their events.

Please yes!

City with rep for EDM like Toronto should have better music festivals.
