Tie fighter is pretty much the only title from (my) yesteryear that I don’t think has been bettered yet.

Agreed.

I haven't played Tie Fighter in years, and I don't even remember the neat stuff about that game, but I'll say that every genre has been facelifted, updated, and improved at least a few times through the past two decades.

Certain things have happened in the game industry that I could live without (prices of games, number of rehashed sequels, etc.), but all in all, there really hasn't been a better time to be a gamer. We have motion controls, Blu-ray discs, online multiplayer, video rental services right from the console itself, not to mention re-releases of retro classes with increased quality of the visuals coming out on a weekly basis. I know that just about all of that pertains mainly to console gaming, but PC's have seen their share of awesomeness in the recent past as well.

yeah, the lazy sequels certainly aren't anything to crow about, but things have come a long way since my monochrome commodore 64 days, or being crammed close to my 12" tv coz my master system cords only reached so far.

but we really need a fvcking update to tie fighter!

+1 on the update. Though did you ever check out the Star Wars shooter on Gamecube that launched in 2001? I never played it, but apparently it was amazing, I don't remember the name. Either way, I know you prefer PC gaming, so it probably isn't your cup of tea anyway.

And regarding today's lazy sequels...well, to be honest, that was a problem in the past as well. With games on the Atari, a ton of them basically just ripped each other off, not really introducing anything new to the table and just sticking to tried and true gameplay concepts that the developers knew would work.

All of that monotony in gaming ideas is what almost caused the game industry to crash in the 80's. Luckily I believe it was the NES that prevented it. Thank you Nintendo!

Another tie fighter / x wing game would be awesome. The only thing is i dont think people would buy games like that anymore. But perhaps im wrong and space sims will make a comeback just like rpg games 10 years ago-

i dunno. i just assume there's a market because i know i want it, haha! freespace 2 came out in 1999 and that's been pretty much it as far as epic space combat games go. im sure the world is itching for a new one.

i'd like one where your performance affected the next mission(s) etc. in all seriousness, sometimes i have trouble getting to sleep coz my brain won't let go of the space sim its building in my head, lol. if i ever win lotto im gonna make this game

Freespace 2 was like that on several occasions. There was that mission where you had to destroy the sathanas' main beam cannons, and those you didn't blow up were in the next mission. Then there are tons of minor ones where cruisers and capital ships you don't destroy make an appearence later on.

But yeah - I'd like to see that mechanic expanded. Freespace 3 needs to be made, and tie-fighter needs to be re-made.

really? i never noticed that. coolness. and yes, definitely need the sequels.

the only thing that i thought freespace didn't quite achieve was the sheer number of units in a battle. i almost creamed my pants though when i fired my first salvo of missiles and they all had a trail through the "sky". awesome.
