And older cards can run higher than 1600x1200 on desktops usually. I used to run very very high 4:3 ratio resolutions on an old ATi Radeon 9800.

Most cards support up to 2600xwhatever it was/something ridiculous for the past well ages, 5 years would be a good bet though.

my current graphics card looks like it will go up to 2048x1536 but my widescreen monitor won't display any resolution other than 1680x1050 (which isn't an option) correctly. i can get it to display 1920x1440 but then the desktop area extends past the edges of the monitor which is quite annoying.

LCD monitors have a fixed resolution, anything higher and the screen crops the whole desktop, anything lower and it gets blurry because you have multiple pixels on the monitor trying to do one or more pixels on your desktop.

I got the set up you want. It works just fine. I have my macbook pro screen + a 20 inch 1650 x 1080 screen running as external monitor. You just have to go in display setup...
