Club house music used to be very happy and carefree in general, but these days it's as you said, emotionless or dark. The only good clubby, cheesy track I can think of in recent times that really embodies the old spirit is this one:
Fonzerelli - "Moonlight Party" (yes, I really like this track).
Does anyone know of any recent tracks like this? Clubby, cheesy, carefree...yet still quality (i.e decent percussion and melody?). I want to make a commercial house mix for a friend but I stopped following it around 2004.

Yeah, Moonlight Party is definitely a fun tune. It's been a guilty pleasure of mine since I first heard it.
They cram too many tracks in, but 70% of the tunes are complete quality: Lazy, Genedefekt, My Vision, Dove, Reckless Girl, The Sound Of Violence, Come On Over, The Weak Become Heroes, Superstylin', Shiny Disco Balls, Star Guitar, Out Of The City, Safe From Harm, Mother.
Fuck that was a good year for commercialism. All the tracks listed above are firm favourites of mine and I'm not embarrassed to admit it like I am with recent cheesy crap. It mixes trance with house; who would have the guts to do that now?!

So could I. I follow all the guys like Ben Watt, DJ Meme, Sydenham & Ferrer etc.
I'm talking about cheesy club house, not proper house.

I'm really sad to say, Australia doesn't play a big part on the world music scene. We had a handful of very good progressive guys in the '90s (Kasey Taylor, Luke Chable, Ivan Gough etc) and some good psy trance artists now, but one thing we fucking excel at is horrible club house...of the electro variety.
Guys like Andy Van, Dirty South, Mr. Timothy etc. Probably in the lead is TV Rock, half of which is former LEGEND Ivan Gough. What a sad decline for him.
Listen to this tripe which is "rocking" the airwaves and commercial clubs at the moment:

I think its already been mentioned a couple of times... but the 'happy' vibe depends on the kind of genre youre inclined towards... personally I've never been able to digest the diva vocals that classic house leans towards and that entire 'happy house' sound never worked for me... it seemed cheesy, forced and in my opinion very fake... I gravitated towards trance music straight away because it seemed to have a more 'legit' and 'serious' vibe to it...
More recently I've been exposed to a lot of deep and tech house along with techno (both the energy driven banging kind as well as minimal). These genre's again appeal to me because they are low on the cheese factor and in my humble opinion exhibit a certain amount of credibility in their sound...
I know im probably sounding extremely elitist right now, so let me clear up one thing, I can enjoy house, even the happy kind as much as the next person just as long as the atmosphere is right... and onto artists who are rocking this sound these days - Laidback Luke, Arno Cost, Norman Doray, Angello & Ingrosso, Guetta are all bringing the 'electro house' sound coupled with soaring/happy vocals, big room synths and basslines.... very commercial, very in your face, and every now and then makes for a great great night. It just depends on the kind of sound you're inclined to, and I just feel with the dominance of trance in todays EDM scene, this kind of sound has taken a back seat... especially in 08. Lets see if it comes back in 09...
