I agree, Alon. I don't think you've got to lie to keep the conversation going (otherwise there would be severe bootstrapping issues with human conversation ), it's the implications that got me interested on this behaviour.

I don't think it's a big deal because that's what I'd do. But, I don't think both statements really convey the same message... all I'm trying to do is to understand this different way of speaking because I think it's something much more interesting than it seems.

When you say "Yeah, I've done that, but I'd like to hear about your experience" you're making it explicit that the thoughts of your interlocutor are more important to you than your own (and you may be later asked about your thoughts as well, which you may just not be willing to share for whatever reason). When you say "no", however, what kind of advantage would that bring? It could be a better way to keep the focus out of you, even though I don't think most people would ever choose to do that

It depends. Conversations happen in rounds, so to speak. If you think you could wait a little longer before introducing a new topic or idea, and you'd like to keep your rounds as brief as possible until you feel you can give a more interesting contribution, then why not do it?

btw, i don't recall ever asking that type of question, other than maybe to make sure whoever i'm speaking to has the relevant background knowledge on the topic before telling of my experience.

in your examples, i got the sense that the questions would be asked out of politeness, as in a request to proceed.

mine is: it sounds unnatural to begin with, at least in the english language; it's either leaping over a few back-and-forths, or it's going into far too much detail. thus it would hamper a conversation.
