its all about track selection....

also, i think someone using ableton would be able to make a better edm mixtape for various reasons.

with the hip hop mixtapes tt's are essential

Setting yourself apart from the pack is probably the best advice you can work with.

even then you still gotta sell yourself somehow.

like all the djs with facebook spamming their friends to come out because otherwise they cant get a gig.

doesnt matter how good you are, if no one knows about you, and no promoter willing to give you a shot

i've always said, the hardest part about djing isn't about the music, it's about pulling a crowd

i've given slots to guys who i know couldn't mix chocolate milk with a spoon but my club owner wanted people in the door and money in the bar

it really is about who you know in this industry, get out and be friends with everybody

you could be the best dj in the world, if you can't pull a crowd you're not worth anything

get out and network, don't worry about putting cds in the hands of djs and promoters (trust me, i don't listen to them, i go on rep), get them in the hands of clubbers, they're the ones that are going to get you the gigs

Yeah but what does DJing locally really do for you anyway? I know I don't want to be a local DJ.

personally, you want all the exp you can. obviously you gotta pick your venues and gigs because it's awkward playing top40 when you're just a house DJ.
I learn a little more everytime I play out. And i love playing to a crowd.

You gotta start somewhere. Even being a local helps to get your name out, esp if you end up being an opener for a big name DJ and he likes how you play or whatnot. Networking.

Plus being a good producer but shit DJ is not a good thing either. lol

Everyone I know who is was a local DJ 5 years ago is still doing the same thing. The people I know who have 'made it' all have been focused mainly on production and that is what got them to where they are now not playing local gigs.

that's all fine and good but honestly. can you play in front of a crowd?

besides, playing out should be fun, not just for purpose of making money

you are correct. you gotta produce if you want to go big, but i know for me, i wouldnt turn down gigs to play at your local area esp if you're just starting out
