hmm, i seriously doubt a newbie would appreciate anything hardcore/underground/critically acclaimed
if he's looking to see where the genre is currently at, something commercial like Armin's ASOT 2008 should one way or another point him to whether he likes trance or not
if he's not looking for current the ISOS series should work I guess...

it will point him to 'commercial trance', the easiest to identify with for someone who isnt a seasoned listener of the genre...

in my experience it helps get newbies on their way, till their tastes get more refined, and they can digest sounds they cant easily identify with in the beginning
however i am generalizing, and if the person in question wants to challenge himself/herself, then throwing commercial out of the window might not be a bad idea...
