Yep you can go all software as long as you have good monitors. That is the most important part it is hard to get out a good song if you can't hear into the reverb tails and hear how your instruments are being panned in the stereo field etc...
You don't have to go with Gens but I'd at the very least go with ADAM A5s/A7s unless you want to upgrade again. Like I said ideally you should spend half your budget on monitors. My problem right now is that I can get something sounding great on my sound here at home, but it doesn't translate. Proper monitors will fix that for me.
