I too am a little turned off by all that would-be hippie, pseudo-oriental, psychedelic cliche stuff. Also i know some of their material is constructed around commercially available samples, i can't help but feel it's a little cheap. That said i do enjoy their music to some extent, but i prefer other projects of Posford's like Celtic Cross and Dub Trees (both with Youth), and Younger Brother (with Prometheus).

I always thought that their name was "Sphongle"

Well, they have excessive amounts of hippism and this interferes with my sanity

Dedicated to all things hippy

Oh yes they were. I've got old goa trance compilations from the mid-90s filled with samples of people blathering about drugs, mind expansions and outer body experiences.

After hearing lots of adoration for Shpongle I suppose I was expecting something a little smarter.

If you didn't like Shpongle, check out Mystery Of The Yeti and The Infinity Project, which are very similar groups also involving Posford but without the cliches.

It's not so much that I dislike them, I just found it difficult to take them seriously when I was rolling my eyes so much. I also found them less groundbreaking than has been implied. To me they sound like Enigma with drug references instead of religious ones and psychedelic samples instead of chants. It's good fun, but not worthy of the hype, for me.

Enigma had a kind of unique atmosphere though huh? (When they first appeared)

the 3rd album is really good but it needs to be heard in a tired state. I was up for a day due to a 4am flight this last summer and as everyone slept on the plane, the low level lighting & the sun peeking through the clouds with allsorts of weird colours to watch, it was a lot of fun. I think i woke a lot of people up tapping away though
