You dont need it, but its one of the greatest mixing techniques. IMO
Knowing how and when to sidechain will help you alot!

You're not too happy with Sonar 8 in general, or you're not too happy with its sidechaining capabilities?

Lol Its gotten so bad artists sit around and decide wether they will sidechain because their kick will inevitably clash.... How about don't make your kick and bass clash in the firstplace?

Crutches are bad.

And where do you get this sidechaining only occured after 2003? side chaining is an automation effect where you cause one parameter to change based on an element of your song, such as the kick or bass or another parameter. People have been doing it since electronic music was invented. they didn't rape kick/bass side chaining untill 2003, but it makes no never mind as trance mostly died in 2000... :P

It is one creative tool amoungst many at your disposal. Also sidechain is not just for making sucking sounds. It can be used creatively to add some movement to a sound.

Still sounds good though

Processing a highly structured and complex pattern of sensory input as a unified percept of "music" is probably one of the most elaborate features of the human brain.....understanding how music is perceived and how it may elicit intense sensations is far from being understood.

I know, most of my post was sarcasm. Because i have a hunch the OP was specificly refering to kick/bass compression. And this is used mostly for fixiing things, so the contention that "can trance be made without it" was kinda funny because it implies trance music as a whole is broken and needs side chaining to fix it.

As for pre-2000 that is imho when trance in general [trance/house/goa] was really good. I wouldn't say tourists lost intrest in 2000, id say they took over in 2000 Not many make actual trance anymore...and i mean a loop that plays for 10 minutes.
