I see.

Thanks, I suppose. So I take it you hated Recharge, Surrender, and Chase the Sun, just because they had vocals? I truly appreciate your opinion, I just feel like that's a little harsh on the producers, when you ignore musical content and judge entirely based on vocals.

Sure, I agree, vocals in psy may seem a tad bit out of place, but remember, this stuff is leaning more toward trance rather than psy, so I don't think they're that misplaced.

Trust me, I'm not trying to trash your opinion, or try to say that this mix was the greatest thing ever, because it's not, nor am I trying to be defensive, I just think that the presence of vocals in a track doesn't make it bad, that's all.

Thanks for the post, kr00t0n, seriously. Look out for a special double-mix with uplifting and dark psytrance coming next month! I promise, the vocals will be minimal.

No, the vocals force you to ignore the musical content. In electronic and dance music, vocals work in one of three ways:

a) To ruin a track that's good musically.

b) To act as a crutch for a track that's musically poor (90% of cases).

c) To act as another instrument that complements the song properly, adding to it and enhancing the music. This occurs in precisely .000000000525% of cases.

I see your point, I feel like in Recharge, part a) is in effect, but for the last track, part c) is the case.

Again, thanks for all your thoughts, I'm really not trying to be defensive or upset, I was just trying to understand why you didn't like what you didn't like. I always appreciate the listens. Thanks guys!

Oh don't worry about it dude, music is entirely subjective, we can't all like the same things, and for some reason 99% of the time vocals in psy just doesn't work for me and can spoil a track.

This is why I love it when tracks are released with vocal and dub mixes

Just coz it isn't my thing doesn't make it bad

Right, have listened to most of it now and...

...It's not bad at all, however, I do have one major gripe with your transitions.

You have a tendency to fade the tracks out very quickly. I can understand it if the mix is going awry, but you seem to do it noticeably on just about every transition (although it did happen less towards the end of the mix), even when they're perfectly in time. I think you should try and keep the tracks in the mix together a bit longer, especially when you still have a melody from the exiting track playing, as this is particularly noticeable if you suddenly fade it out.

I must admit, I'm not a fan of the vocals in Recharge either, although I think vocals can work in psy-trance, ones that do are few and far between. Chase The Sun I do quite like, although I adore the Planet Funk original and do tend to avoid remakes of old trance tracks myself. I think it's this remake factor which maybe makes it a little cheesy, not the fact it has a vocal.

Right, it's v.late and I should get to sleep! :P

Definitely understandable, and it's sometimes hard to judge with full on stuff, especially when the incoming track has a cool melody or sound you want to focus on.

Let's be honest, most full on follows a fairly cookie cutter pattern with each track, and most transitions match each other perfectly in time. I will agree with your statement about most of my transitions being too quick, sometimes I listen to them and feel like I should still have a bit more of the previous track going, even if it's in time. I will seriously consider this for my next mix, it's been often pointed out that quick mixing is a bad habit of mine

That being said, thanks a ton for the listen, I've listened to a bunch of your sets and I'm a big fan!

Be sure to check out my next set, it's gonna be a journey
