Same here... I love doing it, but it's not effective. I'll eventually have to stop the music when I'm ready to drift away.

That brings up another point... if I'm listening to music in a winding down, trying to sleep, reflective type of way, I like to do this in headphones. Unfortunately, I can rarely fall asleep while facing upwards, and headphones don't really cater well to laying on my side. Another reason I rarely can listen to "music to sleep to" and actually sleep.

IMO some people suffer of a sleep disorder or something or must be really exhausted.

To me probably some minimal or ambient could help me to fall asleep, but never tried though.
