You know what's funny too? They're not paying me. They asked me to play.

Doesn't matter. If you go there and play tracks no one is going to like then you fail as a DJ.

Oh right, because I know which tracks they are supposed to like.

In fact, the organizer and the people from my grade have agreed on mainstream EDM and top 40/remixes. I told them what I was planning to play before I accepted the gig.

I'm going to tell you as straight as possible: Don't do the gig! No party is going to be happy after this gig is over.

You are not going to get anything out of doing this. I know you are probably at the point where you just want to be able to play in front of people, even for no money. The fact is that you are going to be miserable, and its going to show in your performance and mood. You are not going to get any contacts from this, and you're not going to get any name recognition. You're going to end up with a room full of pissed-off adolescents who aren't going to give two shits about your "TECHNO" music.

The school is not going to get anything out of this. They are probably thinking "lets get one of our students to play for free...what could go wrong?" The reality is that they are going to end up with a lot of complaints from students whining that "that guy only played TECHNO, and he didn't even have Poker Face!" This makes the school look like a bunch of dolts for hiring the wrong guy to do the job, but who can blame them for trying to stay within their (shrinking) budget?

My advice? Tell the school to hire a Top40 DJ, an agency or wedding DJ that has the updated catalogue and specializes in doing stuff like this. They get paid good money to deal with the BS that us EDM DJs try to avoid!

Believe me, I've done gigs like these when I started out. I was miserable every time because I didn't get to play what I wanted to play, and when I did I got a negative reaction. How could this be? ____ is such a wicked track!!! Yet the people went crazy for "Gold Digger" and "Fireman," while I cleared the floor with my House every time. I DID get some experience, but I did not get any name recognition, nor did I get any real contacts while doing those early gigs. In short, I did not get the gigs I actually wanted, because I had the notion that doing Top40 would help me 'get a foot in the door.' Don't make my mistake.

thanks for the advice. However:

I won't be miserable from doing this gig. I personally like A LOT of the current top 40 stuff and hip hop today. I know all the major hits, I've been to a lot of parties and it's always the same 20 tracks. I do have Poker Face. It's not like I don't have anything other than EDM which seem like the case for a lot of people on TA. Furthermore, people requested for Daft Punk/Bob Sinclar and Fedde Le Grand stuff.

My plan is to play all the Poker Face, Heartless, Just Dance, Paper Planes, Sexy Back stuff in the beginning. Then move on to EDM around 2 hours later.

A lot of people in my grade go underaged clubbing and frequent clubs such as Zouk. They even went to Joris Voorn, Steve Lawler and quite a lot of people like Armin van Buuren. Go figure...

Also, it's not the school who's organizing this. It has COMPLETELY nothing to do with the school. It's an afterparty for the prom organized BY students as well. The students are the ones paying for it and they'd rather spend more money (around 5000+ bucks) on alcohol rather than a DJ.

I'm not looking for name recognition or contacts at all. I just want the experience of playing for a large crowd.

Expect to be asked to play it again. And again. And again. In fact, expect some people to just want these songs on repeat all night long.

(had to endure Sandstorm four fucking times in a row one night...)

The thing though is that at least Sandstorm is a quality track. Maybe not four times in a row... but still its better than any of the shite listed above.

Somehow page 2 just seems to be a repeat of what I said on page 1 complete with the "Pokerface" references lol.

Nothing against you doing this for your friends... Just be prepared when you go to "switch" if people dont start begging for the same songs over from earlier.

When your playing top 40 people wanna hear whatever is on the radio right now. They know the songs.. they know the beats.. they can keep their rhythm to it without thinking. You sprinkle in a few older tracks or some songs that are coming up/on the way out and people will praise you for the set.
