As a guitarist, I can assure you that differences in distortion modelling are very real and make a huge difference, anyone who says otherwise is quite simply wrong

That said, EQ isn't as big a deal as most people think, most of them will do the job, but I prefer certain ones for certain sounds, can't really put my finger on why TBH.
