i cant see how anyone can listen to only EDM yet i know a few people that used to when they first found or got involved in the scene and were ok with the lifestyle.

I have never listened to only EDM. I have always listened to most other kinds of music with heavy interest in west coast rap, heavy metal, hard rock, and alternative. I've always gone through phases with pop music. some is OK but most is absolute crap. I personally feel that right now we are going through a phase of some excellent producers out there making some decent popular music. With good music coming from the likes of Gaga, britney and pussycat dolls etc, its just a good time for their kind of music.

TBH, I do find that people that only listen to one kind of music end up being coincidentally also narrow minded in general.

JK, but you know what I mean, it's perfectly fine to like other music besides EDM. Personally, I can't handle 24hrs of non stop EDM. Last week when I was in Miami, I was so tempted to go to a latin club and check it out. However, the one I really wanted to go to was next to Space & Studio K. So guess what I did? I ended up at Space! hahaha

EDM is the greatest music and has the greatest fans in the world.

Julia trying going out to a top 40 club and see how much you like it. You might not be asked for drugs often but you will have to beat aggressive guys off with a stick and see at least 1 fight a night.

The togetherness of the scence is one of my favorite parts about it.

I mostly listen to EDM, but I also listen to Latin music, Funk, some really good rock, hiphop, pop, J-pop, 90s freestyle, and even within EDM i don't just listen to trance but also house, techno, drum & bass, dubstep, etc.

And you'll definitely have friends even if you don't party. Generally whats cool about EDM peeps, is that they're fun people in general and you can hang out with them in a non-music setting

I've been listening to EDM for almost 7 years now, (Just turned 20 ), raving for 4, and clubbing for 2 and definitely realize that you grow, you evolve, and you need to explore.

I will always love trance, but especially when I got to college I started giving other genres more of a chance, and lately I've gotten into the techno scene, as well as going to drum & bass, dubstep, house nghts more, and went to my first breaks party the other week.

I've only been going out every weekend for 2 years now, but I've had the fortunate luck of getting to experience the scene in mulitple places and my first two years of partying being forced to take long breaks because of boarding school, and meeting all sorts of different ravers and EDM heads in LA. Then when I got to go to school in DC I've gotten to get involved with a fresh scene, and next year hopefully I'll be in Tokyo. And recently I've been hitting up Baltimore to party occassionally, and its got a completely different scene from DC. I go to NYC every once a while, and am headed up there this weekend. But even when I head back to LA every winter for a few weeks or a few months for the summer, I get exposed to many fresh faces. So getting to experience the scene in these different locations for extended periods of time I think is quite helpful in not burning out or getting jaded.

If I saw the same people at the same clubs every week for years, I'd probably have to take a break or at least lose some of its magic.

But ya every time I've gone out to a non-EDM concert, its been freaking awesome, and keeps the magic going. Variety is the spice of life

I can understand getting tired and perhaps 'needing' a break from the scene. Heck, I have been partying strong for 15 years straight (hence my 'vet' handle). There are periods where I do take a break from EDM and go out and listen and dance to other types of music, and I know many others have done the same, but I cant ever ever remember someone saying they have an animosity towards it.

I understand the whole 'drug' angle as you described it. However, I know a couple of really close friends of mine that dont do anything when they go out, no booze and no drugs, yet they are there enjoying themselves till the doors close. Their reasons are health and religious, but my point is that they enjoy the scene just as much as me, regardless of what the majority of the people are doing. I could be wrong but my guess is that there is something more to your decision then just the 'drugs'? Dont know, just me thinking out loud.

I posted recently that I was going up north for the first time and some nocal TA's whom I never met were gracious enough to pick me up from my hotel and introduce me to all their friends. That would not have happened if I would have posted in the 'hiphopaddicts' forum.

Having said all that, I share the sentiments of most here that liking several types of music is important. Shit, I came in to work pumping some old school spanish rock. I can honestly say though, that I could never get into top 40, but thats just me! Hopefully whatever decision you make is the best for you.

there's absolutely nothing wrong with stepping out or away from a genre you've spent years following. people will be drawn to music that they can relate to - and obviously, whatever circumstances they're faced with in life will influence how they will perceive music. it's all relevant.

clearly, dance music culture is not typically consistent with mainstream culture; it has taboo and 'hedonistic' elements which either draws people to it or pushes people away from it. unfortunately, for many people, that seems to be the primary reason they get into the music in the first place (parties, drugs, staying out late, etc). i won't, however, go as far as stating everyone participates that way.

i spend plenty of time listening to music outside what is discussed on ta forums, good music is good, regardless of genre. i don't go out to every party just because it's 'techno or house', i just dj at clubs when i can, pick particular parties that i want to go to, and do other things in my spare time with my friends and girlfriend. just follow what makes you happy, keep in touch with the people that you care for and continue to live life just the way you want!

Wow, I'm really glad to see that you all understand where I am coming from. I was afraid that I would get bashed on, but I should know better. A lot of the people who posted in this thread are the people I was talking about... the friends who I have made throughout the years that I don't want to lose, and I know I won't lose you!

No, it really is the drugs. There is nothing else (aside from the fact that the recent EDM music I've been hearing sucks lol). Like I mentioned in my original post, it's so unmotivating for me to be around drugs all night. Whether I'm doing it or not, I just don't want to spend my weekends being around it anymore... seeing all the washers with their cracked out faces, hanging out at clubs and having conversations with people about how good the pill or K they just did is... or how sick this or that DJ was. I'm just over it.

I'm not over my friends though. I'm ready to do other things in my life... travel, relax, check out fine dining resturants, cool lounges, have interesting conversations over a couple glasses of wine, rather than getting fucked up (or watching people get fucked up) ALL night. The club/music/rave scene does not interest me anymore whatsoever.

Yes, I totally agree with what Ryan said too. The togetherness of the people in this scene is something so special. That's what I don't want to lose. I hope that this togetherness can continue outside of the club/dance/music scene for me and my friends. And yes, I agree that someone in a "hip hop" scene would not go and pick you up and welcome you like that. But I don't want to be part of any kind of music scene. I just want to be myself.
