I would have thought that about $150 would have been a good asking price on this update. Its not that it falls short (although theres things its missing) but its just too expensive (esp. in the current economy) to be widely accepted.
They're stupid to price themselves out of the market like that, it just means more people will pirate it, and those people won't go back to buying again. If they dropped the prices (like logic did) a couple of hundred dollars, they'd get a lot more customers IMO.
LOLO, I think a lot of people justify the $2000 they might spend on a laptop by saying its for work/school as well as music. Its hard to justify spending $850 on a piece of software which you're never going to make a profit out of.
I think ableton have been slipping TBH, they're including less and less in the updates and asking more and more for them. The only real changes are the new warping engine (great, but should have been done in the last version when we asked for it), crossfades (ditto) groove quantise (ditto) and some new devices which most people won't use because they already have third party stuff.
All the update does is bring live further into line with cubase and logic in terms of features. Max4live is the only thing thats making me think they're still interested in innovating.

The people who actually buy products like this, get their money's worth and then some. Its expensive for the people would have cracked anyways. So they dont lose much, the same amount of people who are going to buy the program will buy it, because Ableton's multiple uses, between production and live gigging. Ableton ultimately runs a software business, they already have a great product in Ableton 7, but they cant ride Ableton 7 forever, especially with its diminishing returns as time goes by. So they have to bring out a new version + some new updates and patchwork, even if they are minimal. These software companies get enough money stolen from them, I dont see why anyone can complain about how much it costs or how much they charge. If its worth it to your goals, buy it, if it isnt, move on or crack it like you said people will because its too expensive. They would lose more money if they dropped the price, since the type of people who actually buy products like Ableton, see the value well past $300-$400.
