Putting music out in a digital form, and getting mad if people use it.

Is like butting a sticker on your car that says "ram me" and then getting mad that people rammed you.

I run a label, but take my advice with a grain of salt. We are just now beginning distribution this month.

But my only concern would be is if there is a high quality copy (full of course) floating around out there. A shitty copy being played on youtube isn't a big deal. I'd rather it not be a full copy, because some noob DJs will play 128kbps mp3s and also share them. In general, any full copy that is available by direct download or through something a person can rip, at any kbps, is discouraging, but certainly not a back breaker.

Now that's just what I think in terms of the label aspect.

As for personal aspects, I would be glad somebody liked it and decided to do that. If they have a full 320, or even a full copy, that is your own fault if you're trying to do the label deal. I havn't looked, but how far down does this video come up on a google search? I personally don't search youtube when vetting out a track, but I always look on google.

Good points, Stephen. It's actually a 192kbps version, so mid-quality. Like I said earlier, it's kinda flattering, so I'm really not pissed about it. It's actually my personal favorite of all our/my songs, so it's cool to know that others think it's pirate-worthy.

Since the song hasn't been "released", it only comes up in a handful of google search returns.

This happens often, ive had "videos" made from some of my tunes as well on youtube.

In fact almost every song out there gets youtubed like this, if someone likes it.

Only difference is they actually bothered to switch pictures on yours from time to time.

You should take it as a compliment

LOL, I'm sorta experiencing the same, only not with Youtube. Two of my tracks have been released on the 2nd of April, and when I enter there names in Google, there are more illegal downloads than I can click ..

Somehow, it's flattering , on the other side, it's pretty shitty.

i think you should be more concerned about the full quality mp3s you have in your website (flash player), anyone can either just record them or download them from the mp3player playlist file. if they are signed tracks that is (which they should be, sounds like a good and professional track)

like said pretty much every track is on youtube, but most of them are mono and/or bad quality, so they're mainly for preview and promotional purposes. if bad quality track is good enough for someone then he deserves to get it for free
(yes i know there are some really hq tracks in youtube too, but most are not)

This hasn't happened to me, but in general I wouldn't worry about a youtube video with your track, only if you see your track in a file sharing site. If it really bothers you just PM the guy on Youtube and ask him to take it down.

P.S.
Good work on that track.

You should be glad, Youtube is a resource used by DJs all the time for researching new music. Besides, its a complement, and its not like its good quality enough to want to listen to.

Your only concern is that its not signed yet, you shouldn't release your tracks if your planning on getting them signed IMO, it makes it harder for labels to promote your stuff.

Lulz. No internet exposure.

But I randomly sold a CD to some dude in Oregon on CDBABY.
Well it turns out that a friend of a friend of a friend knew him, and played some of his sets from Oregon for me.

It was really surprising to hear my tracks in the set, lol.

But then again... I got a few bucks for that CD, and you didn't, however internet exposure is global. Mine was limited to Corvalis!

I don't recall getting mad or saying that I was angry about him jacking it. However, I do recall stating exactly the opposite :
