I've personally always thought that "everything sounds the same" is one of the stupider arguments some people use when trying to express their dislike towards something. I guess they use it (together with some other empty phrases) to leave a better impression than they would by simply saying "I don't like it". Most of the stuff, even in quite respected genres such as dub techno (is there a single fan of Echospace who haven't compared them to Basic Channel), minimal techno (Sleeparchive stuff is still awesome even if Mika Vainio did almost the same thing 10 years before), deep house, tech house... sounds way too similar because let's face it - dance music is not designed to sound too versatile or creative. |
I agree, actually I would hate it when I won't be able to recognize a producers' "sign" when listening several tracks. Faithless, Klubbheads, Chicane, BBE, Robert Miles, Jam & Spoon, PvD and even Scooter, all had something recognizable in their tracks. Without that they never would have been successfull. So people want it to be the same till a certain level.
I guess a small difference between tracks for me could be seen as no difference to someone else.
And yes, sometimes I don't like a track because it's almost the same as another, but on the other hand I sometimes love a track because it only sounds a little bit different then another.
That's my view, and I don't think I'm the only one seeing it that way.
