I have been a drummer in a metal band, basist in a reggae band, I played guitar in various bands. I have made Drum and Bass and indeed house and old school hardcore (a la prodigy style back in the day).
I have been making trance for about 6 years now and I have learnt a lot about engineering etc that I wouldn't have learned otherwise.
Sure, a lot of the stuff today is really boring but because it lacks musicianship. My stuff probably isn't as good as the regular stuff being released, but I have had releases too and that's good enough for me. I can happilly say that I love Trance.
Why do people automatically assume that making trance is easier than other forms of music? I find House music so easy that it's downright dull, drum and bass is no different, but that's not suggesting that I do it well or as well as someone who is in to it. But they probably couldn't make trance the way I do.
I have a lot of respect for good Techno producers, to capture that sound is an art form.
Trance is by no means the Pop music of EDM, that belongs totally vocal and electro house at the moment. Trance is more like the red haired step child that's locked away in the cupboard under the stairs. It's the sort of thing that people will say they don't like even if they really do just because they want to be like their friends. That is the type of rep that trance has, so dont' kid yourselves.
I don't see anything wrong in making other style tracks with trance influences... it's called evolution and perhaps something good can come of it, you never know.
I think the main reason people bash trance is that it happens to be something that a lot of us like making and people just aren't into what we do at the moment, very frustrating but it's the truth.
Just my two cents worth...
Cheers
