I don't agree with him either, when you put in a cd you are not trying to see a dj jump @ you.
I asked his fans (Steve Aoki's) what they liked about him and they said only his entertainment. Music is supposed to be about what you hear not what you see.
How many times have you paid an azn guy to jump around in front of you ?

You can disagree, but as a DJ you run the risk of your crowd being bored during your sets, since you probably feel the music alone will entertain a crowd. Its a romantic view to have, and its an ideal view, but...you wont build much of a following having this view. Anyone can play music, anyone can have taste, anyone can put a set together, entertaining your crowd is simply an extra dynamic that some of the best DJs have, so why not seperate yourself from the average DJ by adding that extra dynamic?
One of the reasons why I enjoy Danny Howells and Carl Cox is because they have an entertaining personality while they play their sets, its not as flamboyant as Steve Aoki, but if that dynamic did not exist in their sets, I dont know if id enjoy them as much. Same goes for someone like Lee Burridge.

Fair enough, he does play shit music to you and myself. To his crowds he probably plays as good as music as any DJ that we think plays good music. A DJ's purpose is also to entertain though, and if he can do that through his physical actions, it's just an extra dynamic towards his performance. I'd be bored if I went to a show and all I got was some good music to be honest. I want to see the DJ's personality as much as I want to hear the music, I think they go hand in hand. |

all good points and i see what your trying to say, but the DJ's you refer to are actually good DJ's. I'm all for an entertaining DJ (Eddie Halliwell), but at least make sure the DJ is a good DJ.
Steve Aoki, well... lets just say i wouldn't download his music for my listening pleasures.
