I'm sure you can get people to spill a lot of different information in such situations, both real and false. If we try pulling off people's toe nails we might also be able to find out more. We could execute held captives' children, I'm sure that would yield a lot (and it appears to be concerns about his family that led KSM to divulge more and more, since they were being held in Pakistan)

The point here isn't whether it works or not.
The point is that if we consider ourselves to be a civilised nation that believes firmly in our justice system, our values and our core principles, then we should have no need for torture.
There will always be ways to rationalize the ends justifying the means. The question is how far do you want to take it?
