wtf sounds more like you had a jackass for DHS officer. When I came to Canada, they asked all kinds of financial questions. I rebuked on most of them using the "I have enough" statement. They asked how much I had in my bank account, credit cards, etc. I rebuked though. They don't need that info. They just want it.
