It seems that PT8 has really improved the midi functionality. It seem to have some really nice features. I would surely love the try the M-Powered since I have a M-Audio card (not for long though ). And the USB key is a pretty common thing these days, I don't think it's that gay. [/OFFTOPIC]

That Reaper 3 looks really nice, although since I just got my copy of Cubase 5, I'm not really interested in looking into Reaper. I think the market it getting a little over-flooted when it comes to sequencers, and I'm not specificly meaning Reaper, I know it's around quite a while.

Do you mean an overall waveform being shown when you audition media items as they've now got that. Was quite surprise how useful it is to scan through long wav's.

4mb is pretty lightweight and it only expands to a 14mb install and the plugins still don't have any fancy GUI.

AFAIK they've made some nice improvements to stuff like CC / Automation where you can have it just like Ableton where there are separate automation lanes or you can opt to group together etc.

Or the parameter modulation where are you can use the audio playing to modulate parameters on your fx chain. E.g. decrease a chorus wet/dry when it gets louder etc

See, now thats cool, I wish ableton would look at that and rip off features like that And I think theres some stuff you can do with scripting as well? Theres some really good in depth engineery/experimentalish features in reaper, and it seems like its built on a solid base as a good recorder as well.

But no, I was talking about ableton's session view, where theres a grid of clips for live use. I didn't use the right term. If reaper had that, it'd probably be a winner, although I'd still be suspicious of it given the price

Ah I see, well Ableton have got that whole Live clip CJ thing in the bag really and it works great for that. Although there is ppl are making noise for similar features I'm just not sure if the dev would go down that route. lol you can pay $225 if you want, I'm personally not a massive fan of Abletons price gouging.

Yeah, they're pricing themselves out of the market now that solutions like reaper are coming along. I think most people pirate ableton now anyway, which might explain why 8 is the slowest , buggiest, bloatiest and has the least new features ever.

I mean, how hard could it be to implement something like the sidechaining thing you just described? And the benefits would be huge. anyway. Can probably be done in Max4live when it gets here I guess...

What other cool features does reaper have that other DAWs don't?

Dont you have to pay extra for Max4Live?

I'm not the greatest expert on Reaper, I started using it to extend the life of my old 3.4ghz AMD due to its v.low cpu usage, but I like the following about it:

Flexible tracks: any track can have audio, midi and be a send, return or group etc

With something they call: Parameter control to Track control, you can add any parameter of a vst/vsti to the track channel e.g. you can add a knob that adjusts the cutoff of the Sylenth1 instance on the channel.

Comes with élastique 2 Pro pitch shifting / time stretching algorithm

Reamote so you can have a spare pc process an fx chain for you

Run reaper from a flashdrive

I'm not 100% sure on the limits of Max4Live or JS but JS which Reaper can use to code new plugins can be found here: http://reaper.fm/sdk/js/js.php

Ahhh Pro Tools your paying for the Whole system, it's a proprietary DAW Which only works with digidesign/m-audio interfaces.
For instance HD version is the far superiour recording system with huge track counts and DSP power with crap all latency, this is what makes a Pro Tools system worth it.

Yeah you have to pay for max for live. But it should be a fairly robust scripting engine, which is good. The JS thing in reaper looks a bit flaky, and I'm not sure what the point is given that the M4L advantage will mainly be for live work, which reaper doesn't seem to target yet...

Yeah, reaper seems very full featured. Ableton doesn't have a reamote type thing yet, although I think as of 8 it has the rest. But version 8s so obscenely expensive that its actually putting me off supporting them. Pretty poor that they're so far behind a 60 dollar alternative.

mzvirbulis yes I'm quite aware how pt works. I used pt le for about 3 years. LE is shocking though, thats what I'm saying. Reaper kicks LE's arse for a fraction of the price. It probably also gets results on par for TDM in almost all applications, unless your scoring an orchestra or otherwise need a hundred tracks processed with low latency.

Yeah I dont think it compares to M4L, more for editing existing plugins. Maybe for adding a freq analysis display to a EQ or something.
