Well, Akg says u dont need an amp for them, it wouldnt hurt obviously, but, I use a Saffire audio interface, and they sound fantastic.

As far as the 280's, that is what I used to use, if u listen to tracks in my sig, they were all made on the 280's and in my opinion sound horrible, since I got the 701's, my tracks sound more on par.

What is the difference between akg 240's and akg 240 MK II's? I have the regular akg's and the highs are to strong (piercing almost) are the MKII's the same?

Having just tried my own pair of AKG K 240 S, I'd agree the highs are too piercing. At low volumes even, but I managed to get used to it for now.

Here's a follow up question for the thread:

Using a Maya 44 USB out to my AKG's to mix. Cheap I know but was told that the audio out on it is good enough for what I'm doing.

Is there really any benefit to getting something like a Fast Track Ultra (way up there), or something more modest in the $200 range when I'm not interested in inputs whatsoever, only audio out to a good pair of monitoring headphones.

The Maya shouldn't color the sound yes?
