You don't mate. If you want to do that just go for it. I was just saying what I'd do personally. I for one wouldn't care what a DJ played so long as the tunes were good.

The very fact you asked the question means there's some kind of stigma attached to just playing old tracks. Like you say, you get accused of being retro or living in the past.

If you can get sets based on just playing 90s Trance then go for it, I'd come and listen

my current sets are mostly comprised of tracks from 1-6 years ago. records i don't feel i played out enough, and people didn't hear enough. everyone keeps asking me where i get this crazy stuff they've never heard...

i drop a 90s techno track every now and then, pitched down to 128ish

There is no such thing as a record that's too old for the dancefloor.

If a track does it for me once, it'll do it again imo

I'd play trance if I could get away with playing tracks from the 90's again.

I mean EDM for the most part has had a pretty timeless sound since the mid 90's at least. Its hard to date a track just by the production quality or content.
Dude, there are no rules out there saying when it is a good time to play music that is 10 to 15 years old. If there is, somebody show them to me. All that matters is if you play the right tunes, with the right tunes, at the right time...with the right people on the floor. And I'll drop a 95 song, in a heart beat!! I'm willing to bet that there are 95 tunes, that I have, that most of today's people wouldn't be able to tell what year the trance tune was made. There's a good chance that they might even think it's a new song, too..

Fanciulli dropped Energy Flash and Big Fun on friday night and it was nothing but cheers and smiles all around, even from the chin-strokers.

Records can be over-played, or placed inappropriately in a set, but they can never be too old.

when I played at a rave in SF a few years ago no one really cared what kinda electronic music I played or how new it was, people just had a good time with what i had to offer

unfortunately if I play a hop hop gig people can be really anal about what hip hop i play or how many throw back tracks I throw in a set, and I like the old school hip hop and funk tunes

I think a lot of 10+ year old tracks sound better than a lot of stuff being released today. Back then they had to more with less, and I prefer the sound of hardware over ableton any day.
