Absolutely...reminds me of this guy's little rant:

i recently revamped my music collection from mp3 (most of it at 128 kbps, damn you itunes cd uploader) to lossless. it was strange hearing music at FLAC level (or apple lossless, in my case). it didn't sound right at first. i had to train my ear for it - but now the difference is undeniable. i'm never going back.

And DJ Sammy did it before him:

Joel shouldn't be complaining about MP3s in whatever quality. He owes his current career success to them.

Also, compression-recompression aside, don't forget about the reproductive devices. I'm sure people who listen to the "HQ" youtube rip on their laptop speakers can't tell any difference 1. because they're using shitty laptop speakers (or iphone earbuds) and 2. because they CAN'T TELL THE DIFFERENCE.

My mom couldn't hear the vibration and distortion caused by blown speakers with ripped foam... most of the populace can't either.

However, when you have good speakers, you can REALLY tell when the production is good. Not muffled, balanced, etc. Youtube quality for youtube-level speakers.
