What happened to you was actually just miscommunication. You thought it would be lame to ask for her number and she thought you weren't really into her since you didn't ask for it.

If your town is really that small, then chances are that one of your friends knows a friend of her. Just ask around and get her number and give her a call.

And should it be a lesson for next time to just go ahead and ask.

Dude, you're scaring me right now by how right you probably are. But you're right though, for the last month this has taught me a lesson about not being as forward as I should be.
