This was my lame attempt using sytrus.

Sytrus = Virus.mp3

Anything that sounds like a virus is just a feeble virus imposter imo.

But I still imagine an expert programmer would be better at fooling people then me. (into thinking a sound came from a virus) But I think that demo sounds like crap.

I'll just have to settle I suppose for what my own programming skills can afford soundwise.

Theres 4 different sounds.
Virus Example.mp3

Sound 1 is just some simple bit crushing.

I don't think Sound 2 has any unusual effects at all.

Sound 3 seems like it has a couple oscillators doing FM with a high ratio.

Sound 4 is some kind of distortion, not sure what.

Software still sucks at distortion, although sometimes software gives you the sound you want. The 4 virus examples you posted sound very digital and personally i thought they sounded crap. As said in the above post, its just simple effects, bit crushing, distortion, overdrive, fm, ring mod etc.

The virus effects are nothing special at all imo. If you want to use the virus effects why not route your sounds through its external input?

Wow! I can't believe you don't like those sounds, those are the sounds of trance that inspire me the most.

Imo, nothing has as much emotion and personality as the virus. To each his own I guess.
Oh but I dont have a virus, those are just soundfonts. I have been looking aroundd though and noticed a few synths that are capable of getting similar sounds.

Or at least that dark esoteric quality a lot of virus sounds seem to have.

To be honest I didn't find the sounds terribly inspiring either. When I think "trance" I don't really think of distorted leads, but acid and other high resonance noises, fast arpeggios, and spaced out pads. Just a matter of taste I guess.

Didnt read all posts here, but you would probably want a multiband distortion plugin. Try Ohmicide. It is the most accurate distortion tool I know, you have exact control of which frequency range you want to distort in which way. You can also change "sharpness" of your distortion, which means you can keep dynamics of your original sound and just distort a bit of the peaks. To be honest sometimes I just want to distort a bit and all the options it offers are killing me, but it might be just what you are looking for.
