If you want to go somewhere with some what of a night life I would recommend Oahu. I had a good time in Honolulu last time I was there. From what I understand Maui is more of a family oriented environment.

Maui has more of a vacation atmosphere whereas Honolulu has more of city like atmosphere. From my recollection I went to more bar like places vs. nightclubs

Go snorkeling at Kahaluu Beach in Kona! You'll see the Humuhumunukunukuapua'a fish (that's the State fish, also known as the "fish with the pig-faced nose"), myriads of brightly colored blue, yellow, orange, green fish of all sizes and shapes and a sea turtle or two if you're lucky. Snorkel Bob's is nearby and rents all the equipment.

Definitely go see the volcano, but best not to try and visit it on a "day trip" like I did if you're staying in Kona. The Big Island is, well, "Big" and the roads are long, narrow and wind all the way around the island. Getting to/from the volcano takes half a day easy, and then there's not much time when you're there. It's a spectacular area, cool with green ferns, tropical forests, etc. You'll want to spend a day there and hike out to the "safe zone" of the volcanic shelf to see if red hot lava is oozing into the ocean. If I had it to do over, I would have spent a night in a hotel near the volcano and saw it proper. Mahalo!

Yeah, when we went last year we totally goofed on where to watch the lava flow into the ocean at night. We stayed on the park grounds of the volcano, but then realized when no one else was around that we had to actually leave the park and drive waaaay onto the other side to a special section that the state has blocked off for optimal viewing. You then have to hike in near pitch black on top of old lava flows with nothing but a flashlight and reflective tape on the ground. Scary! It was sooo worth it though. I drove out of that park SO fast to get there in time. It was an adventure.

But yeah, easily one of the coolest things I've ever done. Watching some of the hottest earthen liquid hit the crashing ocean waves is just priceless.

Also, you have to go through a hut where they give you flashlights and have a lot of posted warnings about how far to go (and that if you go farther you risk death like all the other people who ignored the warnings)!

im interning in honolulu this summer and just got back from a trip to the big island. it was an awesome trip and a surreal experience.

everyone i talked to before the trip mentioned that big island has "every climate" so true...

def rent a car and drive around the island (our rental car lady was a b**** but as soon as we asked for a customer complaint form she upgraded us to a convertible mustang for free ;D) we flew into kona, and at first, the terrain looked like an alien planet. but as you drive around it changes to prairies, to savannahs, to the most lush tropical scenery you've ever been treated to with random rainbows popping up everywhere. try not to crash looking out the window while driving on the curvy roads!

def def check out the volcano. we drove around crater ring and walked the lava flows which was alot of fun. if it youre driving and it suddenly gets foggy and smells like sulfur, roll up the window! we saw this sign (photo) only later in the day after we had been subjected to volcano tear gas! we also did a helicopter ride which really lets you see the destructive wake of the volcano. remember not to take any "souvenirs" unless you want to piss off the volcano god

on the way to the volcano, there will probably be tons of places youll want to stop and get out and go explore! to me, the black sand beach was pretty cool and the turtles were out a few weeks back. [high five @ skell] south point is def worth the "12 mile" detour (youll see a sign) off the main road. youll pass some random but cool looking wind turbines and when you get to the end, youll know your at the right place when you see platforms to cliff dive off of. especially if no locals are jumping though, be careful of the current when diving off. the makeshift ladder is hard to climb up when the waves are trying to pull you off and smash you against the rocks! i personally almost died, having forgotten that i was on muscle relaxers (dont ask) but a hippy named rick (to whom i am eternally grateful saved my life).

Man, that place kicked my ass! I wanted to dive off, but my girlfriend was mortified at the thought of that. Instead, we hiked FOREVER to get to the green sand beach, but boy was it awesome!

That's correct. Even the place where I went dancing was a bar with a dancefloor.


I don't like the Big Island; way too volcanic for me. But, the volcano is awesome to see..once.
Depends on how long you're going to be there, if you're going to be there 6+ days, I would recommend 2 islands (just take a plane between the islands).
