I have a similar problem with Cubase 5 (on 32-bit Vista Ultimate), but it only seems to occur when I start getting a higher track count in a project. If I have 10 or more soft synths and a 5-10 audio tracks, C5 won't close properly - most of the time, it hangs for a few minutes after I try to close it, then the "Cubase has stopped working" message appears. When it finally does shut down, my computer drags for a few minutes or until I reboot. That may be the same problem the OP is having. Also, anything beyond a handful of basic tracks in a project will make exporting problematic (crashes, freezes) - the last project took a dozen or so attempts and over an hour before I finally got it exported.

I'm back on Sonar full-time and figured I'd address the Cubase issue if/when I ever have a need to use it again.

Cubase isn't hyped. Now pro tools, that's hyped. Even Logic is more hyped. At the audio school I went to a pretty big name engineer (Kool Keith, Raz Kaz, George Clinton (P-Funk), The Cure, Bootsy Collins, Killah Priest, Cannabis, Sunshine Anderson, Kurupt, Joe Walsh, Nancy Wilson, Don Henley, Mark Latham, Guitar Jack, Mike City, Billy Gibbons, Billy Preston) told me he wish he could be teaching us cubase instead of pro tools, and that's what he uses. But because pro tools and logic are the industry standard that's what they teach.

Does SX 3 ever have this problem? I've never noticed. It's only happend to me with video games before.

I don't want to start another DAW war or anything (I use Cubase), but Cubase above SX 3 is overhyped. SX 3 was great at the time it was released. 4 and 5 are just relatively minor updates. I think it was more of a marketing move to push out VST3 than anything else really. I don't think Logic is overhyped, it has a lot of useful/professional effects and synths bundled. When have you heard a producer using stock Cubase fx/vsti?

I do agree with you about Pro Tools.

It happens to me sometimes, but it disappears quickly (max 30 sec).

Just look at the main 'new' features of 5. Almost everything has been done long before 5 arrived.

If you have any M-Audio devices, try powering them off or disconnecting them from the computer and then ending the process in Task Manager.

This is actually most likely to be a buggy device driver (or the device itself), and not a bug in Cubase. In order for a process to become unkillable ("zombied" is the technical term), there generally needs to be a Bad Thing happening in kernel mode. See here. (Warning: Nerd content)

There's not really much you can do about this; if you have a misbehaving driver, you should consider yourself lucky that you didn't get a blue screen instead. As No Left Turn suggested, the offending driver is likely to be your audio driver when using Cubase, so try resetting the audio device if you can, it might give the driver a metaphorical kick in the ass.

Also, if Cubase 5 is still using that SyncroSoft trash or something similar with a hardware dongle, that could actually be the misbehaving driver as well. Try unplugging and re-inserting the dongle.

I believe that this doesn't happen anymore in Vista; the whole driver system has been rewritten.

Try using the pskill utility from a command line. You can download it free. Just Google it and you'll find a pack of admin tools that includes pskill among other useful utilities.

But thank you every one for the lovely answers!!

As some of you suspected, Cubase remains in the process-tree for just a few minutes and then dissapears! After that, it works fine again and starts up without a problem. So you were right, Thanks!

Oh, and that "Process Explorer" program someone tipped about, it's great!


And yes, there is a huge difference between all of the cubase-versions. For every version it just gets better and better. Cubase 5 is awesome.

Cubase has always done this. Even SX3 had a habit of staying in the task manager after you exit it.

Interesting to see this has never been fixed. It seems to be a Windows only sort of... abnormality, I've never had C4 hang in the activity monitor in OS X.

It will eventually end. You just have to wait a bit. Not sure why it does this in Windows, but it's just something you get used to.

BTW. How are you liking C5? Worth the 199 upgrade cost (I'm a C4 user)?

Actually, this problem has never happened to me in any previous cubase version. I've been using it since Cubase SX 1. Well, regarding if it's wort upgrading. I actually went from SX 3 to Cubase 5 directly, so I don't know all the differences between 4 and 5. But I really love Cubase 5. The new plugins is really a treat! Since I went from SX 3, I really love all the new features. There are some great new effects and vsti's in 5. You should have a look at the differences between the versions and decide from that. But yeah, I think you would be better of upgrading!
