It's always quite surprising to see what stuff people advice...
The question is: What do YOU want?
Is it your dream to use vinyl? Or do you like using effects, filters and everything the digital world offers to modify the tracks? Or may be you don't like the idea of having boxes full of vinyl standing around? etc...
I, personally, love the feel, look and smell of vinyl. So I bought a pair of turntables and a mixer and began. I even have to say: What good are Technics 1200/1210 if you need more than 8% pitch range?
Anyway, I started on (and still use) two second hand Reloop RP-4000 MK II. They work very well...
If you think vinyl is outdated and/or you don't like the idea of having to carry those or if they are to expensive for you or if you simply can't get any, then use CDJs. You have the idea of manual beatmatching, they are smaller and you have the benifits of using CDs with digital tracks.
Regarding the mixer I have to say: You don't need effects and/or a beatcounter!
They are useless for the beginner. At first you anyway have to learn how to beatmatch, when to throw in the new track, how to choose tracks to create a proper flow and how to use the fader and EQs to create a smooth transition.
So why bothering with spending hundreds of $ if you need only faders and EQs? The sound quality might not be on a professional level, but who cares? If anyone is interested download my mix "The Missing Link 02" and tell me which mixer I used!
And regarding those people who write "I spent 1500$ on my beginners equipment, because it has a higher resale value.":
After having made your drivers license. What du you buy as your first car? A high class sports car? A fully costomized Hummer? No! A cheap japanese one...
