its $34/$48 each way Union Station to downtown SD...so for 2 people it costs way more than driving even with parking. having said that i've been wanting to do it myself one of these days. and somewhere around here i think i have some 50% off coupons....gotta dig them up.
if you dont mind taking 2 trains, then from Union station take Metrolink to oceanside then hop on the San diego Coaster to downtown San Diego. Metrolink is $13.50, Coaster is $6.50 so a total of $20 one way.

ah - didn't know that...thanks for the info.
i think personally for convenience sake i'd just stay on the 1 train. $-wise its not a big difference and taking the train sounds pretty fun.

train going north to santa barbara on halloween last year had one whole train devoted to a huge costume party. my buddy was coming up for a wedding, said it was crazyness, half naked chicks, booze everywhere.

IF this high speed rail service ever gets built it will actually be faster to take the train from LA to SF than to deal with the airport.
My family has leased a house in Rosarito since the 1960s. I used to take the train down to San Diego when I was younger and hop on a trolley and meet my grandparents down there to pick me up to take me across the border. Good times for sure. Trains are fun. Especially, when you can drink on them.

Yeah but Metrolink and Coaster have shit schedules and don't always coincide.
I was taking the train ALL the time when I was living in Oceanside. I still will be when I go to LA. I love taking the train. Such a great way to travel as long as it isn't more than 5-6hrs.

And you will spend 12hrs traveling. Amtrak = fail. Fly.
You guys that think Amtrak is the way to go for SoCal to NorCal, you will be mistaken. From LA to Bakersfield you are on a bus. You then take a train to Emryville. Then a bus to SF. It is massive fail.
Right now, Virgin and Southwest, it is $150 rt.

if you schedule your trip on the coast starlight amtrak route you can take a train the whole way.
however, i agree that it's better to fly if you're going between norcal and socal. it's cheaper to take the train by about $50 total (amtrak is about $100 RT from SF to LA) but you'll spend the whole day on the train. also, cargo trains have priority over passenger trains, which means there's the possibility of many more hours of waiting added to your trip.

Ahh yes, I always forget about the Coast Starlight going all the way to Vancouver. Alas, as you said, you have to time it right. Iirc is like 9am each day out of LA Union Station.
Yeah, flying is totally worth it. 1hr flight from LAX or BUR or 1.5hr from SAN. And if you factor in the fact that time is money, it is easily worth it. 12hrs vs 1hr. Hmm. Hard choice for me...not.

beat me posting about the starlight. although it originates from LA. Train you can bring bags and not pay to check them, and you can bring your liquids(liquor)so you also save $15-$25 per bag since you dont have to check and if you would have bought any booze on the flight/airport bar, you are saving $$ by making it yourself on the train :-)
