Check some old Ramirez tracks like the one below. They made tracks in many genres. You can also find them at Thunderdome and Gabber cd's. Even hardcore started a lot slower in the 90's.

I always loved the hypnotic atmosphere combined with a strong bass.

Techno

Modern Trance imo isn't the kind of crap you hear on armin which is glorified popdance and stuff but stuff along these lines

Even 11 - Oblivion

and Wizzy Noise - Sea Song

Now I know a lot of people will say 'thats psytrance' but I don't really think it is. Psy & goa are both trippy sounds to me and I don't find these kind of tracks do that but moreso they entrance me. A mixture of repetition plus warm pads, deep basslines and melodies which at times remind me of when trance really was that, back in the mid 90s and really could put you into that state of mind. For further proof, Art of Trance's retrospective is out now, listen to stuff on there and then tell me how what the 'big' dutch/german/british djs play now is really trance per se.

For me the overall ambiance of the track gets me interested. If it has a groove I can vibe to, then I like it. Then the general flow of the track is what keeps me interested. It can't be too repetative or it looses me.

Well, I agree with Adam. Tech House has changed a lot since 'Who's Afraid of Detroit?' was released. The (good) Tech House that's coming out these days is not like that at all. It now balances the Techno and the House much better, and has more "groove".
