I'd say it's a little rude, Nou. The use of the term "bless you" in connection with the act of sneezing is normally just an expression of concern to which the appropriate response would be gratitude. Most people are not really trying to express anything even remotely religious. That said, even if someone were to say the full "God bless you" and intend a religious message I would still suggest the appropriate response is gratitude. Honestly, when someone wishes you well (to a believer; wishing for God to bless someone is about the best hope one can have for another) that is an expression of love, you should take it as such... what you believe in such an instance matters less then what the person expressing the love does. When my Hindu friends give me the traditional greeting for Dawali I don't shrug them off because they are wishing prosperity upon me... why on earth would I be offended by that?

Wikipedia
Several possible origins are commonly given. The practice of blessing a sneeze, dating as far back as at least 77 AD, however, is far older than most specific explanations can account for.[1]

A legend holds that it was believed that the heart stops when you sneeze, and the phrase "bless you" is meant to ensure the return of life or to encourage your heart to continue beating.[2][3][1]

One explanation holds that the custom originally began as an actual blessing. Gregory I became Pope in 590 as an outbreak of the bubonic plague was reaching Rome. In hopes of fighting off the disease, he ordered unending prayer and parades of chanters through the streets. At the time, sneezing was thought to be an early symptom of the plague. The blessing ("God bless you!") became a common effort to halt the disease.[3]

If someone says bless you I say thanks, in my head they're just hoping you don't get a dose of flu that might kill you.

It's funny for the first time in many moons this is actually quite appropriate with all this Swineflu going around.

Remember kids don't go sneezing on people or you'll catch the Swine, just like this kid did!

I too think it is a little rude, Nou.

For all I care, they could say "May Vishnu enlighten your soul with Wisdom and Mayo", because it is not to be taken literally. Not unlike PKC, I do think of myself as an atheist, but I think it's more important to focus on what's being said than on how it is being said in this case.

Most people do say "Gesundheit" where I live (actually, it's "saúde", but the meaning is the same), but I don't mind the occasional "God bless you" -- it's what is intended that counts. If that gets you riled up, it's like visiting England and railing endlessly because they don't always use the same words.

As a matter of fact, people say "Godspeed" all the time when parting ways ("Vai com Deus"/"Go with God") in Brazil. Sure, that's not how I'd say it but I just reply "You too!". If I get offended if someone says something utterly meaning like "Go fuck yourself", why would I care about "Godspeed", "God bless you", or "Jesus loves you"?

Hell, I used to say "Jesus loves you" in traffic all the time, instead of the usual swear words. Got people puzzled all the time

This!

By the way, I was the one that told him "bless you" and got upset when he didn't say thank you. I think it's a bit rude as well. I am not the least bit religious, but every time someone sneezes I usually say "bless you" out of habit. I don't see what's wrong with saying 'thank you'.

You can't be serious. Is it really that big of a deal to say "thank you"? WOW. And I thought I was immature.
